2014 Springfield High School Fall Sports Preview

The Spartan cheerleading squad will be led by seniors, Gabrielle Weiss, Grace Harmer, and Sarah Boyle. The cheerleaders are led by coaches Deb Buckley and Lauren Counterman and will be competing later this year at indoor stunt competitions.

Led by Coach Chris Mazurek, the Spartan cross country team is looking to continue the success it has been known for. Senior, Olivia Blackton and sophomore Sydni Stovall will be counted on greatly for the girls’ team this season. The boys’ team will be led by senior Sean Stovall and junior Aaron Morris.

The field hockey team is returning from a playoff run last year, and is doing so with a new goalie. Senior, Molly Bauer takes over in net for Coach Linda Nixon. Seniors Christine Campbell and Katherine McVeagh, along with junior Marly Berger look be key contributors this season.

Spartan football welcomes back senior Chris Stone at quarterback. Coach Chris Shelly will be relying heavily on senior running back Martin Worgan and senior lineman Martin Vido.

STHS’s golf team returns Chris Binet and Tommy Godin, both of whom qualified for the Suburban One League Tournament last season. Coach Tom Vizza has made great strides with this program in just two short years.

Boys: The boys’ soccer team returns most of the starters from last year, and also welcomes in newcomers Michael Bonacci, Juan Castro, and Trevor McCaffrey. Seniors Riley Woron and Ben Wiley look to continue in key roles for Coach Dan Meder.

Girls: The girls’ soccer team returns leading scorer, Kaitlyn Gillinger. Coach Suzette Wolf also brings back key seniors Yulia Conway and Alyssa Griet.

Coach Tom Hawley leads the Spartan girls’ tennis program. Senior Rhiannon Richardson, senior Mia Wertz, and sophomore Camille Harrison return to the team as the top three singles players.

Girls: Water polo, led by last year’s water polo coach of the year, Bill Hence, returns with junior goalie, Meg Chandler. Juniors, Katie Quigg and Margrethe Leis will be asked to elevate their games this season.

Boys: The 2014 boys’ water polo team is also led by Coach Hence. The team will be looking to senior, Tyler Chamberlin for strong leadership and production. Also, newcomer, Danny Giampietro might be a player to watch in 2014.

In other news…

STHS also has a change at athletic trainer. Val Blank had been the Spartan trainer for ten seasons. STHS thanks her for her time and effort, and wishes her luck on her next great challenge. STHS is happy to welcome Gwen Murphy as their new athletic trainer.
